Bagley Families in Columbia County New York and Berkshire County Massachuttes

As far as I can tell, Lt. Josiah Bagley (1759 - 1848) settled in the area of Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York. His grave is across the border in Riverside Cemetery, Egremont, Massachusetts,1 which was the Green River Cemetery in Green River, New York.2 Another Josiah Bagley (1756 - 1831) is also buried in Riverside cemetery. This is likely the father of Eli Bagley.3 This may be the Josiah Bagly who served as a private in Van Ness' Albany County Militia - Ninth Regiment.4 The Ninth Regiment also contains a John Bagly. Edward Bagley, James Bagly and John Bagly were granted land bounty rights for service in the Ninth Regiment.5 The Ninth Regiment was raised in Claverack which became part of Columbia County. The Church Records of St. James Church in Great Barrington list children born to couples named Bagley living in Nobletown:7
  • Rhoda, Benjamin and Hannah, children of John and Prudence8
  • Elias son of James and Sarah9
  • David, son of Abigail10
Columbia county is a crossroad for people heading west from all over New England. There are different identifiable unrelated and distantly related families migrating at the same time. Lt. Josiah is possibly the great grandson of John Bagley(b 1668) through his son Josiah (b1702).11 John Holroyd Bagley(1806-1891) who settled in Hudson, is probably Josiah's cousin through his grandfather David Bagley(1752-1793), the grandson of Joseph Bagley(1672-1746) of Providence, RI - John's brother.12 The John Bagly who served in the Ninth may be John Bagley (1731-1797) who appears on one of the first Juries in 178713 and in the 1790 Census14. He is likely buried in Collins Cemetery.15 He may be the father of Rhoda, Benjamin, and Hannah.

Edward Bagley (1761-1837) may be the Edward that received the land bounty for service in the Ninth; he would have been about 16 at the time of the campaign which would have been in the ages defined by the Continental Congress.16 Edward was married at least twice and had several children. He served as a justice of the peace and supervisor in Hillsdale.17 He contracted several land transactions in Columbia and Berkshire Counties in the first decades of the 19th century.18 There is no clear record if he is related to any of his neighbors from the same generation.

James Bagley, the father of Elias and husband of Sarah, is probably not the James Bagly that received land bounty rights from NY. James and Sarah likely migrated to North Eastern Pennsylvania where he serve in the Connecticut 24th.19

James Bagley of Westmoreland County Connecticut

James Bagley: A Likely Reconstruction of the family of James Bagley of Westmoreland County, Connecticut, Luzerne, Pennsylvania and Hector New York from Land, Church and Census Records.

Note: This is a continuation of Wild Speculation Part III: Bagleys of Erie County, New York,

In 1754 a group from Connecticut purchase land from the Iroquois to extend Connecticut west of the border with New York, in keeping with its royal charter. This land was also part of the royal charter of Pennsylvania. Later, Pennsylvania also purchase rights to settle the same area. In 1769, Connecticut set up it’s first permanent settlement. From then through 1799, settlers from both colonies/states fought over the area. Congress set up a commission to resolve the issue and ruled in favor of Pennsylvania’s claim. By 1799, Pennsylvania had made peace with settlers from Connecticut by recognizing and registering their property claims and allowing them to remain in their townships as legal residents of Pennsylvania.1

Among the settlers from Connecticut was a man by the name of James Bagley. James settled in Providence Township, Westmoreland County, Connecticut - what is now known as Scranton, Pennsylvania. Based on local histories, James Bagley served with a group of Connecticut Rangers raised in the Wyoming Valley during the Revolution.2 James Bagley was an ardent supporter of the Connecticut claims to the Wyoming River Valley. He was not present at the Battle of Wyoming in 1778. James made a claim in 1780 to the Connecticut legislature for losses incurred during the Revolution.3 Bagley ford, a crossing of the Lackawanna River, was on the James Bagley farm.4 One town history states, James Bagley’s heirs sold the farm.5 The farm was sold in 1793 by James Bagley.6 Begining in 1776, James appears in the Connecticut Tax Rolls.7 Starting in 1793, there are records of James buying land in the Luzerne County - the most important as part of the committee charged with purchasing a lot for the school house in Providence.8 His last transaction in Luzerne County was in 1799 when he sold land to Peter Crawford.9

Various individuals named Bagley appear in the Luzerne Pennsylvania records in the last two decades of the 18th century.10 Four are associated closely with James Bagley and each other. James Bagley and Sarah Bagley are witnesses on a deed for Jesse Bagley.11 Elias Bagley appears as a witness on deeds for James Bagley.12 In 1793, James Baley purchased land adjoining land occupied by Jesse Baley.13 The 1790 census lists Richard Bagley.14 In the 1798 Tax Rolls James Bagley is listed in Providence, as is Richard Bagley living on land owned by Elias Bagley.15 There is a James Bayley or Bagley in the 1800 Pennsylvania and Federal Census in Providence, Pennsylvania.16 The family has an adult male over 45, and adult female over 45, and a boy and a girl under age 10. His neighbor is Jesse Bayley or Jesse Bagley.17 Jesse's household has a male between 16 and 25, a female between 16 and 25 and a boy and a girl under age 10. James lived in Providence until 1802.18

James, Jesse, Elias and Richard likely moved to the finger lakes region of New York in the early 19th Century. In the 1803 New York Tax Rolls, Richard and Jesse Bagley are listed in Milton, Cayuga, New York - the modern Genoa.19 Starting in 1807, land records in Hector, New York, list deeds involving three men named Bagley - Richard, Elias, and Jesse. In September and October Jesse and Elias jointly purchased land in Hector, NY.20 Richard Bagley purchases land in Hector in 1809.21 In January 1810, Elias sold his land to Jesse.22 In 1810 census, James Bagly is listed in Hector, New York.23 There is a man and a woman over 45 years old and a boy and a girl under age ten. In 1811 Richard sells land to Jesse.24 Jesse and his wife Phebe sell land in May and December 1811.25 The last of the deeds is a transaction in 1811 by Jesse Bagley and Phebe, his wife, of Scipio, New York, indicating that Jesse had moved.

About 1880, Jenks Corey Bagley of Ypsilanti, Michigan applied for a military pension based on his service with the New York Militia during the War of 1812.26 He listed his birth in the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania in 1795. He detailed his migration from Pennsylvania through western New York, starting in Scipio, to Michigan. Some of the places he lists in the application can be corroborated with County histories from New York.27 We find Jesse in other town histories and land records for Jesse and Phebe.28 We also learn from the pension application he has a nephew named Warren Bagley from Port Huron, Michigan.29 Warren is the son of Jesse Bagley.30 Jesse Bagley purchased land in Port Huron in 1839 and we can find his family in the 1840 and 1850 census living in Port Huron with Warren.31

In the 1834, 1840, 1845, and 1850 census records, Jenks is living in Superior, Michigan.32 In  1834, 1840 and 1845 he had a neighbor named Jesse Bagley.33 This Jesse is 20 to 25 years older than Jenks. In 1850 Phebe Bagley, born about 1777 in New York, is living with Jenks. Jenks is also living with a son named Jesse Bagley. This gives us three men named Jesse - Jenks’ son living with Jenks, Jenks’ brother living in Port Huron, and an older neighbor. The shared name and the shared migration indicate Jenks and Jesse are likely the children of Jesse and Phebe Bagley. According to Jenks’ Pension Application he enlisted in Scipio, New York in 1813.34 This along with his birth in the Wyoming valley confirm the men,  James, Jesse, Richard and Elias Bagley, in Hector, New York are likely the men in Providence, Pennsylvania.

In the 1820 Census, Elias Pagley is living in Avon, New York.35 In 1820 Jenks Bagley is living in Richmond, New York.36 Jenks' parents, Jesse and Phebe are likely living in Genoa, New York.37 Avon and Richmond are separated by Lima, NY. Jenks was likely living near his uncle. Jenks moved to Ossian in 1821.38 Jesse Bagley moved to Bisbeetown, in the modern Westview, after 1822.39

In 1844, Alanson Bagley, Nancy his wife and Phoebe Bagley sold land in Irwin township, Venango county, Pennsylvania.40 Alanson purchased the land from the heirs of Elias Bagley. Elias Bagley purchase the land in 1826.41 In 1830, Elias Bagley heads a household that contains two older adults, two adults and teenage boy.42 The older man, likely Elias is 50 to 59 years old. In 1840 Alanson is listed as head of household with a neighbor named Phoebe Bagley.43 By 1850, Alanson has relocated to Rush County, Indiana.44 His birth place is listed as Pennsylvania. He is born in 1796. A Phoebe Bagley born about 1769 in Rhode Island is living with him. In 1860, Alanson is still in Rush County and reports his birthplace as Pennsylvania.45

A man named Azor Bagley born in New York in 1808 is also listed in the 1850 census in Rush county.45 He married Euphemia Beach of Venango county.46 In 1840, there is a household headed by Azor Bagley in Mercer County, PA. Mercer is the county to the west of Venango.47 Both Azor and Alanson named a son Elias.48 The shared locations and family names indicate Azor and Alanson are likely the children of Elias and Phebe Bagley. Alanson’s birth matches the time when Elias would have been living in Providence. Azor’s birth matches the time when Elias would have been in Hector.

In 1830, Alanson and Nancy are probably the adults in Elias' household; Azor is likely the teenage boy. In 1820, Elias Pagley's household has a man over 45, a woman over 45, a man between 16 and 25, a girl between 10 and 15 and two boys between 10 and 15. Alanson would be the man between 16 and 25. Azor would be one of the boys between 10 and 15. Based on the ages of the eldest man in the 1820 and 1830 Census records, Elias would be born between 1771 and 1775. In 1771, James and Sarah Bagley had a son, Elias, baptized in Nobletown, Massachusetts part of the modern Hillsdale, New York and Egremont, Massachusetts.49 This would be a common migration path for people from New England moving to the Wyoming river valley.

Elias Bagley lived near to Jesse Bagley's family until 1820. Jenks Balgey's pension application links the family to the Wyoming river valley in Pennsylvania.  Elias is the same age as a child born to James and Sarah Bagley. Elias has identified children with ages that match the household in 1820. It is likely Elias Bagley of Venango county is the same person as the man who lived in Avon, Hector and Providence. The shared migration, joint transactions, relative ages, and close proximity suggest Elias, Richard and Jesse are likely sons of James and Sarah Bagley who settled in Westmoreland County Connecticut.

Bagley Families of Charlotte County, New Brunswick

There are two men named Bagley who settled in Charlotte County, New Brunswick before 1850: Hiram and Thomas Bagley.

Hiram Bagley died about 7 September 1830 based on New Brunswick early probate abstracts.1 His wife is listed as Eliza Bagley and his brother is John Bagley of Searsmont, Waldo, Maine. He is probably the Hiram Bagley that married Eliza Runnels in Eastport, Maine on Nov. 29, 1827.2 Hiram and John are likely children of Jonathan Bagley and Elizabeth Hall.3

Thomas Bagley was the son of Enoch and Mariam (Hoit) Bagley. He was born in Durham Maine. Family records have him living in New Brunswick.4 With Belinda Malcom, he had five children. He died on October 18, 1877 in Saint James, New Brunswick.

A History of Documents: Richard Bagley and Esther Puffer

There are three published sources that are publicly available that propose variations on the premise Richard Bagley and/or Esther Puffer are the parents of Edward Bagley:

Samuel Allin (1756-1841) Revolutionary War soldier of North Carolina and Kentucky: A record of his many descendants 1756 -1960. (ca 1960) - https://archive.org/details/samuelallin1756100alle/page/n0

Some Descendants of Richard Bagley and of his son Edward Bagley of New Brunswick and Salt Lake. (1973) - https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?from=fhd&dps_pid=IE223049

A lasting legacy : the Bagley family history since 1628. (1997) - https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?from=fhd&dps_pid=IE71740

Around 1960, the family history, Samuel Allin (1756-1841) Revolutionary War soldier of North Carolina and Kentucky: A record of his many descendants 1756 -1960, was published. It is well sourced. On page 227 there is an unsourced chart that connects Edward Bagley of  New Brunswick and Salt Lake through his father to Orlando Bagley back to Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism. The chart lists dates that match the family of  Richard Bagley of Amesbury. Edward's birthdate is given as 18 February 1815. This is the earliest document I can find that associates Edward Bagley with Richard Bagley of Amesbury and the first time any one proposed a maiden name for his mother. On this chart the name for Edward's mother is given as Esther Peffer. The following information is a pair of articles from Progressive Men in Southern Idaho, copied by Adihela H. Bagley. The rest of the information is largely drawn from family records of John Bagley and Hawley Bagley.

Norton Russell Bagley published a series of manuscripts about the Bagley family - Some Descendants of Richard Bagley and of his son Edward Bagley of New Brunswick and Salt Lake. (1973) and Some Descendants of Orlando Bagley, Vol 1-3. (1973, revised ca 1990)1 Based on the introduction, research was conducted mostly by contacting individuals and asking for family relations. Norton stated in Descendants of Richard Bagley there was no Richard Bagley had dates that would match the father of Edward Bagley and identified Samuel Bagley of New Brunswick without identifying a relationship with Richard. He identified Amos Puffer's daughter Esther Puffer as the married wife of Richard Bagley and referenced the Puffer genealogy by Charles Nutt for dates.2 He gives Edward the birth date of 18 Feb 1815, notes the opinion of John Bagley that his father was born in New York, and notes other accounts put him in Hartford, Connecticut.

Martha Bagley Halverson published A lasting legacy : the Bagley family history since 1628 in 1997. On page 39, she recounts the family story about Richard and Edward Bagley. She identifies Richard Bagley as Richard of Amesbury, states he was a sea captain, and identifies Esther Puffer - with the dates of Amos' daughter - as the mother of Edward Bagley. She gives Edward the birthdate of 18 February 1815. Halverson states "Their son, Edward, told his own children that his father was Richard Bagley and his mother was Esther Puffer." No sources are offered for this statement; this book is written in the style of an inspiring history. From the bibliography, Halverson lists the journals of John Bagley and Hawley Bagley and interviews with family members. Halverson states there was no marriage between Richard and Esther, which disagrees with Some Descendants of Richard Bagley.

Halverson used Norton Russell Bagley as a source, and is recounting the same family as Samuel Allin - the family of John Allen Bagley and Hawley Bagley - but does not include Samuel Allin in the bibliography. Halverson probably had access to most of the primary sources cited in Samuel Allin - the personal records of John Allen Bagley and Hawley Bagley, and did not feel a need to cite Samuel Allin, and may not have used it directly.

There is little consistent agreement between these accounts. The authors of these three works clearly agree on the assertion Edward Bagley was born in 1815. They are split on the birth place between Hartford and New York. There are no direct sources listed to check these claims.  Sources created during Edward's life time place his birth was either 1807 or 1810. The place given is "Old Hartford", Connecticut, or CT.  Early records of Edward's activities in New Brunswick favor an earlier birthdate.3 Edward's children reported different locations for their father's birthplace: most reported Connecticut or New York in census records, though some listed other places.

Only two of the works claim Richard Bagley is Richard of Amesbury. Both use this to illustrate the claim of a family connection to Joseph Smith. Halverson relates the family story that Edward went with his father to New Brunswick in search of lumber. Edward's earlier birth puts Richard in question, and at least for Halverson, the mobility of a sea captain is necessary to account for how Richard and Esther met. Richard Bagley of Amesbury's probate records identifying him as a plater instead of sea captain raise additional questions that Halverson and the author of Samuel Allin correctly identified Edward's father. Halverson's correct statements about Richard's marriages and the admission there was no documented marriage indicates she was aware of the lack of external supporting records.

Only two of the works claim Esther Puffer, daughter of Amos Puffer, is the mother of Edward Bagley. The one that does not is the earliest Samuel Allin. It is likely the identification of Esther Bagley with the daughter of Amos Puffer came after 1960. Halverson claims there was no marriage, contradicting statements in Some Descendants of Richard Bagley. For Halverson, the assertion is dependent on the later birthdate in family records for Edward Bagley and Esther being present in Connecticut at the time of his birth. The other authors do not address the issue, making it likely Halverson was aware of questions regarding the relationship, while Norton Russell and the author of the chart in Samuel Allin were not.

Summary:

  • Three published works propose a relationship between Edward Bagley and Richard Bagley of Amesbury and/or Esther Puffer of Jamaica
  • Two document the relationship between Edward and Richard to illustrate a connection between Edward Bagley and Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism
  • None of the authors for various reasons gave sources for the claims
  • In cases where sources were cited, the sources do not establish a clear relationship between Edward Bagley and either individual named as his parents
Updated 4 April 2019 to correct typos and grammatical errors.

1In the three volumes of Some Descendants of Orlando Bagley,  Norton Russell Bagley documented other family lines - the first two dedicated to documenting the lines that could be tied to Orlando and the third volume to those which could not.
2Nutt does not contain any reference to a marriage between Esther Puffer and Richard Bagley.
3Edward first bought land from John Grant in 1832 and is a witness for George Grant's marriage in 1833. These are activities that are usually activities that require a legal majority to be valid. This means Edward would have needed to pass for 21 in 1832. See Legal Age | Bob;s Genealogy Cabinet (http://www.genfiles.com/articles/legal-age/) for a general discussion of the age of majority in the British colonies including additional resources.

Edward Bagley of La Salle, Illinois

This is a follow up to Edward Bagley: Working Hypotheses.

Edward Bagley (1810 - 1874) from La Salle Illinois is not the child of Eason and Esther (Pepper) Bagley. At least not according to his son Alonzo (1837-1923).1 Edward Bagley is the son of Stephen and Ann (Allen) Bagley. There seems to be some confusion between Eason Bagley (ca 1750 to before 1850) and Eason Rowley Bagley (ca 1838 to 1894). I can not find a connection between the two, but the names indicate them might be related.

A Wildly Speculative Reconstruction of the Descendants of Josiah Bagley and Ann Lockwood of Fairfield, Connecticut

Josiah Bagley and Ann (Lockwood) Bagley of Fairfield, Connecticut moved to New York City, where Ann died in 1753. There are no records that this couple had any children in either Fairfield or New York. However people with the surname Bagley show up in the city records of New York and in the church records of Trinity Church - the current Trinity Episcopal Church on Wall Street. Volunteers have produced a searchable on-line database of the surviving records from the 18th and 19th centuries. Using histories, probate, land and church records available online here is a very speculative family for Josiah and Ann Bagley:

First Generation
  1. Josiah Bagley married Ann Lockwood. Josiah probably moved from Fairfield to New York City between 1737, when he was chosen as the guardian of is sister-in-law Susanna and 1749 when he registered as a freeman mariner.1
    1. Josiah Bagley
    2. William Bagley
    3. Mary Bagley
    4. Ann Bagley
Second Generation
  1. Josiah Bagley, Jun registered as a freeman carpenter on 7 November 1752. This is probably the Josiah who married Martha Wenman at Trinity on 26 Febuary 1752. In 1761, Josiah was appointed a fireman in the Dock Ward of New York City. In his will probated in 1769 he is listed as a ship joiner. The will also states he has children but only identifies his wife and brother-in-law Richard Wenman. 2
    1. Josiah Bagley
    2. Thomas Bagley
    3. Catherine Bagley
    4. Edward Bagley

Mary Williams married John Davis on 30 June 1759. John and Mary Davis had a son, Caleb Davis born 11 November 1759. The sponsors for his baptism at Trinity were Caleb Shreve and Josiah and Elizabeth Bagley. (Why these sponsors?) Caleb Shreve is possibly the husband of Ann Bagley(5). Third Generation
  1. Josiah Bagley was christened at Trinity Church, 13 November 1754. This is probably the same person as Lieutenant Josiah Bagley who served with the New York Line during the Revolutionary War and moved to Hillsdale New York. Descendants of his son Josiah had an oral tradition that he was the son of Josiah Bagley who served in the Revolutionary War and received a land grant from New York in Genesee county. Possibly, they are confusing Thomas' brother, Josiah (6) with his father Josiah (2). The couple had 6 children baptized at Trinity. The records list sponsors for the three oldest children. Phebe Bagley died in 30 December 1843 in New Brunswick New Jersey. Three of her children were still living a that time. Her son Richardson filed her will in New York.7

Arthur Everett

Arthur Friedrich Waldemar Ewert was born in Berlin on December 29, 1889. His father, Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Ewert, died sometime before 1896, before Arthur and his mother entered New York on November 11, 1896. Two days later, the widowed Augusta Ewert married August Holznagel, a young German widower living in New Jersey. August had a daughter named Antonia. Arthur grew up in Paterson New Jersey. By 1910 Arthur anglicized his name to Arthur Everett. In 1917 he dutifully registered for the draft as Arthur F Ewert, in Paterson. He listed his declared intention to become a US citizen and his responsibility to support his mother and step-father. In 1926, he married Gladys Ida Coleman and listed his birthplace as Paterson, New Jersey. His birth is listed as New Jersey in the 1930 and 1940 census, and in his 1942 draft card. He died in 1958 and is buried in Flushing, New York. Gladys died in 1975.
