There are two men named Bagley who settled in Charlotte County, New Brunswick before 1850: Hiram and Thomas Bagley.
Hiram Bagley died about 7 September 1830 based on New Brunswick early probate abstracts.1 His wife is listed as Eliza Bagley and his brother is John Bagley of Searsmont, Waldo, Maine. He is probably the Hiram Bagley that married Eliza Runnels in Eastport, Maine on Nov. 29, 1827.2 Hiram and John are likely children of Jonathan Bagley and Elizabeth Hall.3
Thomas Bagley was the son of Enoch and Mariam (Hoit) Bagley. He was born in Durham Maine. Family records have him living in New Brunswick.4 With Belinda Malcom, he had five children. He died on October 18, 1877 in Saint James, New Brunswick.

A History of Documents: Richard Bagley and Esther Puffer
There are three published sources that are publicly available that propose variations on the premise Richard Bagley and/or Esther Puffer are the parents of Edward Bagley:
Samuel Allin (1756-1841) Revolutionary War soldier of North Carolina and Kentucky: A record of his many descendants 1756 -1960. (ca 1960) - https://archive.org/details/samuelallin1756100alle/page/n0
Some Descendants of Richard Bagley and of his son Edward Bagley of New Brunswick and Salt Lake. (1973) - https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?from=fhd&dps_pid=IE223049
A lasting legacy : the Bagley family history since 1628. (1997) - https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?from=fhd&dps_pid=IE71740
Around 1960, the family history, Samuel Allin (1756-1841) Revolutionary War soldier of North Carolina and Kentucky: A record of his many descendants 1756 -1960, was published. It is well sourced. On page 227 there is an unsourced chart that connects Edward Bagley of New Brunswick and Salt Lake through his father to Orlando Bagley back to Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism. The chart lists dates that match the family of Richard Bagley of Amesbury. Edward's birthdate is given as 18 February 1815. This is the earliest document I can find that associates Edward Bagley with Richard Bagley of Amesbury and the first time any one proposed a maiden name for his mother. On this chart the name for Edward's mother is given as Esther Peffer. The following information is a pair of articles from Progressive Men in Southern Idaho, copied by Adihela H. Bagley. The rest of the information is largely drawn from family records of John Bagley and Hawley Bagley.
Norton Russell Bagley published a series of manuscripts about the Bagley family - Some Descendants of Richard Bagley and of his son Edward Bagley of New Brunswick and Salt Lake. (1973) and Some Descendants of Orlando Bagley, Vol 1-3. (1973, revised ca 1990)1 Based on the introduction, research was conducted mostly by contacting individuals and asking for family relations. Norton stated in Descendants of Richard Bagley there was no Richard Bagley had dates that would match the father of Edward Bagley and identified Samuel Bagley of New Brunswick without identifying a relationship with Richard. He identified Amos Puffer's daughter Esther Puffer as the married wife of Richard Bagley and referenced the Puffer genealogy by Charles Nutt for dates.2 He gives Edward the birth date of 18 Feb 1815, notes the opinion of John Bagley that his father was born in New York, and notes other accounts put him in Hartford, Connecticut.
Martha Bagley Halverson published A lasting legacy : the Bagley family history since 1628 in 1997. On page 39, she recounts the family story about Richard and Edward Bagley. She identifies Richard Bagley as Richard of Amesbury, states he was a sea captain, and identifies Esther Puffer - with the dates of Amos' daughter - as the mother of Edward Bagley. She gives Edward the birthdate of 18 February 1815. Halverson states "Their son, Edward, told his own children that his father was Richard Bagley and his mother was Esther Puffer." No sources are offered for this statement; this book is written in the style of an inspiring history. From the bibliography, Halverson lists the journals of John Bagley and Hawley Bagley and interviews with family members. Halverson states there was no marriage between Richard and Esther, which disagrees with Some Descendants of Richard Bagley.
Halverson used Norton Russell Bagley as a source, and is recounting the same family as Samuel Allin - the family of John Allen Bagley and Hawley Bagley - but does not include Samuel Allin in the bibliography. Halverson probably had access to most of the primary sources cited in Samuel Allin - the personal records of John Allen Bagley and Hawley Bagley, and did not feel a need to cite Samuel Allin, and may not have used it directly.
There is little consistent agreement between these accounts. The authors of these three works clearly agree on the assertion Edward Bagley was born in 1815. They are split on the birth place between Hartford and New York. There are no direct sources listed to check these claims. Sources created during Edward's life time place his birth was either 1807 or 1810. The place given is "Old Hartford", Connecticut, or CT. Early records of Edward's activities in New Brunswick favor an earlier birthdate.3 Edward's children reported different locations for their father's birthplace: most reported Connecticut or New York in census records, though some listed other places.
Only two of the works claim Richard Bagley is Richard of Amesbury. Both use this to illustrate the claim of a family connection to Joseph Smith. Halverson relates the family story that Edward went with his father to New Brunswick in search of lumber. Edward's earlier birth puts Richard in question, and at least for Halverson, the mobility of a sea captain is necessary to account for how Richard and Esther met. Richard Bagley of Amesbury's probate records identifying him as a plater instead of sea captain raise additional questions that Halverson and the author of Samuel Allin correctly identified Edward's father. Halverson's correct statements about Richard's marriages and the admission there was no documented marriage indicates she was aware of the lack of external supporting records.
Only two of the works claim Esther Puffer, daughter of Amos Puffer, is the mother of Edward Bagley. The one that does not is the earliest Samuel Allin. It is likely the identification of Esther Bagley with the daughter of Amos Puffer came after 1960. Halverson claims there was no marriage, contradicting statements in Some Descendants of Richard Bagley. For Halverson, the assertion is dependent on the later birthdate in family records for Edward Bagley and Esther being present in Connecticut at the time of his birth. The other authors do not address the issue, making it likely Halverson was aware of questions regarding the relationship, while Norton Russell and the author of the chart in Samuel Allin were not.
Summary:
1In the three volumes of Some Descendants of Orlando Bagley, Norton Russell Bagley documented other family lines - the first two dedicated to documenting the lines that could be tied to Orlando and the third volume to those which could not.
2Nutt does not contain any reference to a marriage between Esther Puffer and Richard Bagley.
3Edward first bought land from John Grant in 1832 and is a witness for George Grant's marriage in 1833. These are activities that are usually activities that require a legal majority to be valid. This means Edward would have needed to pass for 21 in 1832. Edward Bagley of La Salle, Illinois
This is a follow up to Edward Bagley: Working Hypotheses.
Edward Bagley (1810 - 1874) from La Salle Illinois is not the child of Eason and Esther (Pepper) Bagley. At least not according to his son Alonzo (1837-1923).1 Edward Bagley is the son of Stephen and Ann (Allen) Bagley. There seems to be some confusion between Eason Bagley (ca 1750 to before 1850) and Eason Rowley Bagley (ca 1838 to 1894). I can not find a connection between the two, but the names indicate them might be related.

A Wildly Speculative Reconstruction of the Descendants of Josiah Bagley and Ann Lockwood of Fairfield, Connecticut
Josiah Bagley and Ann (Lockwood) Bagley of Fairfield, Connecticut moved to New York City, where Ann died in 1753. There are no records that this couple had any children in either Fairfield or New York. However people with the surname Bagley show up in the city records of New York and in the church records of Trinity Church - the current Trinity Episcopal Church on Wall Street. Volunteers have produced a searchable on-line database of the surviving records from the 18th and 19th centuries. Using histories, probate, land and church records available online here is a very speculative family for Josiah and Ann Bagley:
First Generation
First Generation
- Josiah Bagley married Ann Lockwood. Josiah probably moved from Fairfield to New York City between 1737, when he was chosen as the guardian of is sister-in-law Susanna and 1749 when he registered as a freeman mariner.1
- Josiah Bagley
- William Bagley
- Mary Bagley
- Ann Bagley
- Josiah Bagley, Jun registered as a freeman carpenter on 7 November 1752. This is probably the Josiah who married Martha Wenman at Trinity on 26 Febuary 1752. In 1761, Josiah was appointed a fireman in the Dock Ward of New York City. In his will probated in 1769 he is listed as a ship joiner. The will also states he has children but only identifies his wife and brother-in-law Richard Wenman. 2
- Josiah Bagley
- Thomas Bagley
- Catherine Bagley
- Edward Bagley
- Elizabeth Bagley
- William Bagley registered as a freeman laborer on 5 December 1752.3
- Mary Bagley married Daniel Williams on 23 December 1750. (25 Oct. 2020, Mary Bagley and Mary Williams are likely not the same person. Caleb Davis is not a descendant of Josiah and Ann.) Mary Williams married John Davis on 30 June 1759. John and Mary Davis had a son, Caleb Davis born 11 November 1759. The sponsors for his baptism at Trinity were Caleb Shreve and Josiah and Elizabeth Bagley. (Why these sponsors?) Caleb Shreve is possibly the husband of Ann Bagley(5). Josiah Bagley is possibly the father (1) or the son (2). Elizabeth Bagley is possibly the second wife of Josiah (1) or another daughter of Josiah. Mary could also the sister of Josiah Bagley(1) born about 1707.4
- Caleb Davis born 11 November 1759. (Caleb Davis was likely the Loyalist that moved to New Bunswick.)
- Ann Bagley married Caleb Shreve on 23 July 1750. She is possibly a daughter of Josiah, but could be the sister of Josiah Bagley born in 1711.5
- Josiah Bagley was christened at Trinity Church, 13 November 1754. This is probably the same person as Lieutenant Josiah Bagley who served with the New York Line during the Revolutionary War and moved to Hillsdale New York. When he died in 1848, his grandson Lewis B Adsit administered his estate. He is buried in the Green River Cemetery.6
- Margaret Bagley
- Thomas Bagley married Phebe Gray at Trinity church on 21 June 1786. He is probably the Thomas Bagley who died in 6 January 1818 interred in the graveyard at Trinity. He was 59 years, 5 months and 11 days old when he died making his birth date 5 August 1758. Descendants of his son Josiah had an oral tradition that he was the son of Josiah Bagley who served in the Revolutionary War and received a land grant from New York in Genesee county. Possibly, they are confusing Thomas' brother, Josiah (6) with his father Josiah (2). The couple had 6 children baptized at Trinity. The records list sponsors for the three oldest children. Phebe Bagley died in 30 December 1843 in New Brunswick New Jersey. Three of her children were still living a that time. Her son Richardson filed her will in New York.7
- Josiah Bagley
- James Glean Bagley
- Elizabeth Bagley
- Henry Dames Bagley
- Thomas Bagley
- Richardson Gray Bagley
- Catherine Bagley married Charles Stewart at Trinity on 28 October 1781. Charles and Catherine had two sons named Charles baptized at Trinity. Charles may be interred at Trinity - Charles Stewart who died on 30 March 1805 aged 54, could be the husband of Catherine Bagley.8
- Charles Stewart was born 3 Feb 1783. He was baptized at Trinity on 19 March 1783. William Kingston, Charles Stewart, and Matthew Baggley are listed as sponsors.
- Charles Stewart
- Edward Bagley was born 26 Jan 1761. He probably served in the Ninth Regiment of the New York Militia during the Revolutionary War. By 1790, he was a neighbor of Josiah Bagley living in Hillsdale, New York. He served as a justice of the peace in Hillsdale. He was active in land speculation buying and selling land in Columbia and Berkshire Counties. His first wife Elizabeth died in 30 Jul 1827 and is buried in the Green River Cemetery. She is probably the mother of all of Edward's children. Edward died 21 April 1837 in Hillsdale. He is buried in the Green River Cemetery. His will listed his wife as Fanny and mentioned six children.9
- Sally Bagley
- Oliver Bagley
- Pheobe Bagley
- James E Bagley
- Polly Bagley
- Lewis B. Bagley
- Elizabeth Bagley was born about 1767. She died 22 Aug 1840 in Manhattan. Her will listed as heirs, the grand children of Catherine Bagley (8) and the children of Thomas Bagley (7).10
- Margaret Bagley married Roswell or Rosill Adsit in 1810. Roswell was born in 1773 and died in 1813. He was the son of Elisha and Bathsheba Adsit. The Adsit family history identifies Margaret's father is Josiah Bagley. In 1850, Margaret Adsit born about 1794 in New York is living with Lewis B. Adsit's family. In 1855, Margaret Bagley born in Columbia County about 1792 is living with Lewis B. Adsit. If Margaret went back to using her maiden name, she may be the Margaret Bagley who died 7 Feb 1858 buried in Green River Cemetery.11
- Lewis B. Adsit
- Josiah Bagley was born 11 March 1787 and baptized at Trinity on 16 September 1787. The sponsors on his baptism were Josiah Bagley and Martha Bagley. Possibly his uncle and grandmother. Josiah served in the New York Militia during the War of 1812. After the war he settled in Bayardstown, Pennsylvania were he married Joanna "Jane" McDivitte 28 September 1815. Jane was born about 1793 on a ship in the Atlantic Ocean. Josiah and Jane had seven children in Pennsylvania. In 1840, Josiah moved his family to Liverpool Ohio, where he served as the mayor. Josiah died in Cincinnati, Ohio on 22 October 1860. Jane Bagley died 1 December 1879 in Indianapolis.12
- Thomas Bagley
- Phebe Bagley
- John Bagley
- Sarah Bagley
- Josiah Bagley
- Emily Bagley
- Mary Bagley
- James Glean Bagley was born 11 March 1789 and baptized at Trinity on 31 May 1789. James Glean and Martha Bagley, Junr. are his sponsors. James is probably a family friend. Martha may be an aunt and could be the wife of his uncle Josiah.13
- Elizabeth Bagley was born in May 1794 and baptized at Trinity 23 July 1794. Her sponsors were Richardson Gray, Elizabeth Gray, and Elizabeth Bagley. 14
- Henry Dames Bagley was born 12 December 1799. He was baptized at Trinity 2 March 1800. He he might be Bagley's child who died 10 October 1801 at the age of two years.15
- Thomas Bagley was born 29 May 1802 and baptized at Trinity 27 June 1802. He is likely Bagley's child who died 22 July 1802 at the age of two months.16
- Richardson Gray Bagley was born 29 July 1803 and baptized at Trinity on October 1803. He married Catherine E Doxey who was born about 1804 in Hempstead, Long Island. Richardson was a carpenter and lived in New Jersey and Brooklyn and died 28 February 1885 in Kings, New York. Richardson and Catherine had seven children.17
- Josiah Bagley
- Samuel D. Bagley
- Richardson Gray Bagley
- William H. Bagley
- George H. Bagley
- Oscar Bagley
- Kate E. Bagley
- Charles Stewart was born November 1794. His record at Trinity lists his birth as 23 November 1794 and his baptism as 22 November 1794. His sponsors where Charles Stewart, possibly his father or grand father, John Johnstone, and Martha Bagley, possibly his grandmother. Charles married Ann Pers 19 August 1810 at Trinity. Charles died 8 May 1819 and is buried at Trinity. He and Ann had three children baptized at Trinity. Ann died 14 September 1849 at Cold Spring Harbor. 18
- Catherine Stewart
- Charles Parris (or Pers) Stewart
- Elizabeth Stewart
Updated 17 June 2019 to correct typos - death date for Josiah Bagley was originally typed as 1849 instead of 1848.
Correction 25 October 2020 updated to acknowledge Mary (Bagley) Williams and Mary (Williams) Davis are not the same person.

Arthur Everett
Arthur Friedrich Waldemar Ewert was born in Berlin on December 29, 1889. His father, Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Ewert, died sometime before 1896, before Arthur and his mother entered New York on November 11, 1896. Two days later, the widowed Augusta Ewert married August Holznagel, a young German widower living in New Jersey. August had a daughter named Antonia. Arthur grew up in Paterson New Jersey. By 1910 Arthur anglicized his name to Arthur Everett. In 1917 he dutifully registered for the draft as Arthur F Ewert, in Paterson. He listed his declared intention to become a US citizen and his responsibility to support his mother and step-father. In 1926, he married Gladys Ida Coleman and listed his birthplace as Paterson, New Jersey. His birth is listed as New Jersey in the 1930 and 1940 census, and in his 1942 draft card. He died in 1958 and is buried in Flushing, New York. Gladys died in 1975.

Wild Speculation Part III: Bagleys of Erie County, New York
...good inspiration is based upon good information...
Russel M. Nelson1
One of the struggles with creating good family history is getting good information to base inspiration on. Inspiration can lead your research. I keep finding myself drawn to northeastern Pennsylvania/Westmoreland county Connecticut and western New York. Erie County, New York is the county that contains Buffalo. There are several families named Bagley that passed through western New York including Erie and its neighboring counties. At least one of these families likely came from northeastern Pennsylvania.
John A Bagley(1788-1821)2 died in Clarence, Erie, New York.3 According to his family John A Bagley was born in Pennsylvania. I had speculated John might be the child of Richard and Esther. This is not likely. Records from the Holland Land Company indicate John A Bagley is likely related to Gilbert and John Bagley.4 John Bagley purchased a 120 acre lot from the Holland Land Company for $120 with $20 down payment, in 1811. John A. Bagley and Gilbert Bagley renewed the contract to buy the land splitting it into two 60 acre lots for $315 each with $1 down. Both Gilbert and John remained in western New York until their deaths. Gilbert Bagley died in 1841, in Lancaster, Erie county, New York.5 After John's death Levi B. Bagley, who is probably Gilbert's son, sold a part of the 60 acres that was purchased by John A. Bagley to Peter Blocher.6 While the land deals do not ensure Gilbert, John A. and John are related they make it very likely. Gilbert and John A. are possibly brothers and John is possibly their father.
There is a John Bagley living in Providence Township in the 1800 Pennsylvania Census.7 James and Jesse Bagley are also listed. Jesse Bagley (about 1775 to before 1850) is very likely the father of Jenks Bagley (1795 to after 1884) of Ypsilanti, Michigan and Jesse Bagley (1805 to 1865) of Port Huron, Michigan. Jesse Bagley shows up on tax rolls in 17988 and the 1790 US census in Providence, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.9 He is likely, the Jesse Bagley selling land in 1797 in Luzern10 and he, probably move into Western New York. He is active in land deals in Hector, New York through 181111 when he and his wife, Phebe are living in Scipio, New York.12 He probably moves with his sons through New York and settles in Washtenaw County Michigan around 1828.13 He is listed in the 1834 Michigan census14 and the 1840 US census15. Phebe Bagley is listed with Jenks Bagley in the 1850 US census.16 Before moving to Washtenaw county, Jesse's family lived in Newstead, Erie County. Newstead is right next to Clarence and Lancaster.
Richard and Elias Bagley are neighbors of John and Jesse Bagley in Providence, Pennsylvania. They are likely related to and possibly brothers of Jesse Bagley. In the 1798 tax rolls Richard Bagley is living on land owned by Elias Bagley.17 He listed next to Jesse Bagley. Richard and Ezra Bagley are listed in Luzern county in the 1790 US census.18 Richard Bagley is listed in the 1800 US federal census in Cayuga county, New York.19 Richard and Jesse are both listed on the Milton, Cayuga, New York tax rolls.20 Richard and Elias buy land jointly in Seneca county in 1807.21 Richard and Elias both sell land in Seneca county to Jesse Bagley in 1811.22,23 Richard may have moved to Allegany county. Richard Bagley and his wife Harriet buy land in Allegany County New York in 1831.24 Elias may have moved to Livingston county. Elias Bagley (1773 to 1845) is buried in Ossian.25
James Bagley was a private in the Connecticut 24th Independent Infantry during the American Revolution.26 From 1776 to 1778 he appear on the tax rolls for the Pittstown district in the Wyoming river valley.27 He seeks compensation for his losses during the Revolution from the Connecticut Legislature.28 He is active buying and selling land in Luzern, County Pennsylvania from at least 1786 through 1799.29 He along with Sarah Bagley are witnesses on a land sale by Jesse Bagley in Luzern county in 1797. In the 1800 US census, James Bagley and Jesse Bagley are living in Providence, Luzern.30 James Bagley is listed in the 1810 US census in Hector, New York.31 In 1813, James Bagley buys land in Tioga County, New York.32
We have a family that may have moved from northeastern Pennsylvania into western New York and dispersed from there. A possible family tree might start with

Jinks Bagley's pension application gives his birth place, notes he joined the New York militia in Scipio and notes his residences from his discharge at Fort Niagara until his arrival in Ypsilanti where he is living at the time of the application. Based on this application and histories of Washtenaw, Jinks settled in Superior, Washtenaw, Michigan in 1828. His pension application was denied.

Russel M.
A possible family tree might start with
- James Bagley (about 1750 - after 1813) and Sarah.
- John Bagley(about 1770 - after 1811) who settled in what became Erie county New York, around 1810.
- John A. Bagley (1788 - 1821) His family moved to Ontario and Michigan.
- Gilbert Bagley (about 1786 - 1841) His family moved to Michigan, Iowa, and Wisconsin.
- Elias Bagley (1773 - 1845) who settled in Ossian, NY.
- Richard Bagley (about 1774 - after 1813) who left Hector, NY for parts unknown.
- Edward Bagley (1807 - 1868) His family moved to Utah. (I'm reaching - it's speculation.)
- Jesse Bagley (about 1775 - between 1845 and 1850) and Phebe (about 1777 to after 1850) who moved to Washtenaw county Michigan.
- Jenks Corey Bagley (1795 to after 1884) His family settled in Michigan.
(Jencks and Bagley are two family names in Providence, Rhode Island. The name of Jenks Bagley points to a possible relationship with Deacon Joseph Bagley of Rhode Island. The families were neighbors in Rhode Island for at least three generations.) - Jesse Bagley (1805 - 1865) His family settled in Michigan.
Corrections 18 March 2019: I mis-read the land records in footnote 21. James Bagley moved into Hector, New York from Tioga. This James Bagley (1791 -1843) is the husband of Lydia Foster (1790? - 1825?) and Elsie Lott (1801 - ?)
